Our Team Beliefs and Goals
We believe that fifth grade is a turning point in a student's life and education. Coming to middle school can seem scary, but once you get through the unfamiliar stuff, it can be the best thing that has ever happened to you! We believe all kids are unique, each with his or her own special talents/qualities/super powers. We believe school can sometimes be hard, but it should be a challenge, because with challenge comes growth. All our students are expected to understand enough about themselves that they recognize when they are "giving it their all," or when to "give a little more." We will challenge ourselves to set and reach new goals. We will challenge each other to work a little harder, give a little more, and be the best student, friend, and human being that each of us can be. Heroes are people who do more than seems possible, do all they can to help others, and work hard to "save the world." We believe our kids can do all of these things, starting right here and right now, in fifth grade. Let's accomplish greatness, together!

Mrs. Shaffer
|
Kelly R. Shaffer is a Shelby girl. Born and raised, married, and for most of my life living right here in Shelby, Ohio. There was a time when I thought that I would not live my entire life here, but I came back and now I am glad that I came back to raise my family in my hometown. I was born on October 29, 1966 in Shelby Memorial hospital. I lived my whole childhood on East Whitney Avenue, and went to elementary at Whitney School. Terry Russell was my principal K-6. When I was in high school, a decision was made to rename Whitney school “Russell Elementary,” after my principal. This sort of made me especially proud to have been a student there when he was principal.
I graduated from Shelby Senior High in 1985...The last great class! (ha ha) I started college at Bowling Green State University, but that wasn’t the right school for me so I transferred to THE Ohio State University. I graduated from Ohio State in 1991 with a teaching degree. At the time, I was living in Columbus, and loved it there. I was also working at a daycare center as a toddler teacher. I absolutely loved my kids. I had a three year old kid in my class who could say the alphabet backwards as fast as he could say it forward. Go ahead, try it! It’s not easy! Anyway, I tried to keep this job, but I ended up moving home and it didn’t pay me enough to drive back and forth every day, so I got a job here in Shelby at Pioneer in the early childhood lab as a toddler teacher, where I worked for 6 years. In the meantime, I was married to Kris (Mr. Shaffer), had a baby girl-Miranda, who is now 20 and attending Heidelberg; and a baby boy-Dylan, who is now a freshman at Bluffton University where he plays football for the Bluffton Beavers. I’m super duper proud of both my kids! They are amazing people and my life wouldn’t be complete without my two kids and my husband, who’s my very best friend. When Dylan was a baby, I took some time off from teaching to raise my kids and work on my master’s degree (which I earned from Ashland University in 2005!) When I wasn’t working, we quickly ran out of money so I had to get back to teaching. It just so happened that Ms. Goth, who was working at Dowds school, needed a long term sub because she was about to have Kennedie. I was hired to be her sub, and we became very close, life-long friends ! We have been teaching 5th and 6th graders together ever since! from: Miss Studd... I am excited to start my first teaching job at Shelby City Schools. In May I graduated from Lake Erie College with a major in special education. I am coaching high school volleyball and softball this school year as well. I look forward to working with the students and parents this school year! Mrs. Luster is a Shelby native and lives here with her husband Dave. They have six sons, with two living in Chicago, two in New York City, one in Nashville, and one in Lancaster, Ohio. She has 3 grandchildren. An eighth grade aid for many years, she will be dividing her time between eighth grade and fifth grade this year. She is looking forward to this new opportunity. We have already had a great start to this school year. Mrs. Lifer was born and raised in Shelby. She is married to her husband Steven, who is Shelby's current interim finance director. They have three daughters: twins Kathie and Suzie who are both married; and Beckie, who is a senior at Ohio Northern University. Mrs. Lifer spends her days in the 5th grade math classes supporting our students who need extra help. Mrs. Brumenshenkel lives in Shelby with her husband and her two daughters, Rachel and Morgan, who both attend college. She enjoys working with kids to further their math goals. |
